Day 3 - Saturday 29 June 2019
Batalla Del Vino - Haro Wine Fight - Brunch and Haro After Party
With the party in the main square running through the night you may or may not have had some sleep but at around 7am virtually the entire population of Haro at dawn makes the trek to the wine fight venue in a local park/scenic lookout at a nearby mountain range. Free local bus shuttles run from besides our campground to near the fight venue, approximately 5km from town. Then the fun begins.
The 29th is the day of the patron saint San Pedro - a massive day for the townsfolk of Haro. It officially kicks off with a procession led by the town's mayor, on horseback, to the Cliffs of Bilibio, where a mass is celebrated followed by the crazy morning wine free-for-all. Hundreds of thousands of litres of wine are brought in from local vineyards. It's complete carnage as the entire crowd attempts to cover each other in wine using their hands, water pistols, buckets, balloons and basically any vessel they can find. Wine soaked bands continue playing lively Spanish music as the fun-filled crowd continues to soak each other. The atmosphere is electric.
Late morning most drift back to town (free shuttle buses operate) to either continue the celebrations at the Plaza de la Paz or have a much-needed shower and siesta.
Back at PP Travel's base, we offer a hot brunch. Then enjoy well-earned afternoon rest or maybe a swim in the campground pool before heading back into town for another night of bars, tapas and street partying.
Day 4 - Sunday 30 June 2019
Check out of your tent by 11am, say goodbye to new friends as we pack up and head onto Pamplona for Fiesta de San Fermin.
