Royal Ascot Guide - Put the ODDS in Your Favour!

If you're looking forward to Royal Ascot this year, Peter Watton, from matched betting site Odds Monkey has given us his guide to the famous horse racing event.

As one of the biggest racing events in the British calendar, Royal Ascot brings some of the world's most famous racehorses together to compete for over £4 million in prize money, along with some famous faces and royals in attendance. With high-fashion, great food and atmosphere and some of the most important races in the country, you might have already started planning your trip. Here, I'll be giving you my Royal Ascot betting guide, so you know just what to do when you get there.

Royal Ascot - Putting the odds in your favour

When and where will it take place?
This year's Royal Ascot will be taking place from 18th-22nd June at the Ascot Racecourse, High St, Ascot SL5 7JX. According to fans, this particular location was chosen by Queen Anne as she was riding her horse between Windsor castle and Ascot. She was supposedly to have said: "this would be a fine place for a race", then the Ascot Racecourse was built.

When should you place your bets?
You can place your bets as early as the list of runners is announced, however you might decide to place them at the very last moment; it's entirely up to you. Usually, for Royal Ascot races, the final list of horses will be announced around 48 hours before the event, but the betting market is open before then, so you could actually start betting quite a bit in advance. However, it's important to remember that betting longer than a day before the race leaves you open to the chance that your horse will drop out, though you will get better odds. On the other hand, betting closer to the time minimises the chance they will not run, but your odds will be shorter. Before placing your bet, you should check its terms and conditions to see if you'll be eligible for a refund if your horse doesn't end up running.

How do you decide which horse you'll bet on?
So, you've decided when you're going to place your bet, but how will you decide which horse you're going to bet on?

Pick blindly: If you're not all that interested in the odds and more interested in the spirit of Royal Ascot, picking blindly can be the easiest way to place your bet. This can be as simple as choosing your favourite colour or jersey, your favourite name or number, or even just picking one at random. This way, the betting becomes more of a lottery, as you're not taking into account the odds or probability of it winning.

Research the odds: Odds indicate the horse's chance of winning. The lower the odds, the more chance it has at being successful. But this doesn't necessarily mean you should always bet on the horse with the lowest odds, because betting on one that's less likely to win (with longer odds) means you're going to get more money back if it does win. But, in most circumstances, betting on a favourite is most likely to give you a winning horse.

Follow the experts: Some experts, who we call tipsters, give their predictions for all kinds of races based on the horse's recent performance and the conditions (going) of the upcoming race. Their predictions may be helpful to you when choosing your horse, but be careful, because some tipsters charge a fee for their expertise. If you'd rather do this research yourself, you can easily gather information about a horse, including their trainer, owner and parents, from the Racing Post and the current going from Sporting Life.

Try matched betting: If you're looking for a way to make a profit, why not try matched betting? This requires you to use the free bets given to you by online bookmakers to cover all the outcomes of a bet, meaning no matter what happens, you're more likely to get some money back. Although your profits may not be as dramatic as more traditional forms of betting, it's a solid way of earning an income from the event.

With unbeatable fashion, races and atmosphere, Royal Ascot is a spectacle to enjoy. No matter what your betting style is, this simple guide should get you on track for a great day out.
