Pamplona, The Festival of San Fermin and Ernest Hemingway

Pamplona city and the Festival of San Fermin have long been well known to festival enthusiasts but there are many other festivals with bull runnings held each year throughout Spain, France and parts of South America that have far richer and longer histories, yet the Pamplona bull run to this day, continues to remain the most famous of them all.

This is primarily because of Ernest Hemmingway. and his own personal association with the city of Pamplona made famous through his books - "The Sun Also Rises" and "Death in the Afternoon". Contrary to much popular belief Hemingways "Death in the Afternoon" was in itself, essentially a non-fiction book about bull fighting in general and not actually about the Pamplona Bull Run as such. However, "The Sun Also Rises" is a brilliant novel of suppressed emotions, buried values and the ongoing lost optimism found in post World War 1 society and is centred around a menagerie of characters culminating with much partying, drinking and shenanigans during the Fiesta of San Fermin held in Pamplona.

The novels title was originally going to be simply "Fiesta" but Hemingways publisher convinced him to alter the title to "The Sun Also Rises" before publishing in 1926.

Pamplona city has streets named after Hemingway, statues in honour of Hemingway, and a never ending love of Hemingway. The city itself felt as though Hemingway was one of their own through his pilgrimages there between 1923 and 1959.
