Best Cities to Visit in Spain
You may think of Spain as being mainly sun, sea and sangria, but this beautiful country offers so much more. Absorbing museums, fantastic architecture and churches steeped in history can be found in almost every city across the country. That is not to mention the exciting nightlife, which sees even relaxing seaside towns change into a hive of music and activity once the sun sets. If you're planning a trip to Spain, you won't want to miss out on visiting these five most fun cities in the country.
Madrid
Madrid is the capital of Spain and is an elegant city that really comes alive after dark. Cafes, bars and clubs open late into the night to showcase the party atmosphere. For the best clubs and biggest DJs, head to the Gran Vía and Sol, or for a quieter evening, choose the Salamanca district. Catching a show at one of the flamenco tablaos is also a fun way to spend the evening. Of course, there are some brilliant sites to see during the day too - check out the Royal Palace of Madrid or Museo Nacional del Prado for history and culture and the Sunday market at Ribera de Curtidores and Plaza de Cascorro is a site in itself, with around 3,500 stalls to peruse.
Valencia
Valencia is an incredibly vibrant city that has lovely Mediterranean beaches and plenty more to explore. The fabulous food market offers an authentic taste of Spain, while the copious restaurants are known for serving amazing paella. The most popular neighbourhood to enjoy the nightlife here is called Barrio del Carmen, which you'll find in the town's old quarter. The biggest event of the year is Las Fallas festival, which sees the whole city party for a week as each city section shows off elaborate statues, sets off fireworks day and night, and then burns the statues as the finale. Plus, if you are planning a summer trip you won't want to miss out on La Tomatina, a huge tomato-throwing festival held in the nearby town of Bunol on the last Wednesday of August each year.
Barcelona
Barcelona is one of Spain's most famous cities for good reason. Not only is it a beautiful location, but it is also regarded and voted as one of the world's best cities and one of those iconic cities that "never sleeps". The urban beaches and the architect Antoni Gaudí's fantastic buildings are a big draw during the day, while the streets bustle at night with people heading out to restaurants and bars. This city has a fantastic mix of culture, history and fun activities. While in Barcelona, it would be a shame to miss out on one of the city's most iconic landmarks, the La Sagrada Família, known as 'the unfinished church'. This stunning building has been under construction since 1882!
Sitges
If you prefer a more relaxed trip, Sitges is the city for you. It is full of interesting museums, such as the Museu Romàntic which is home to a large doll collection. This is also where you'll find Bodegas Güell, a gorgeous winery designed by Gaudí. In contrast to the lazy feel of the stunning Sant Sebastià beach and museums are the trendy bars and fashionable restaurants, such as 33 Sitges. This is another town that comes alive after dark, when the clubs open to welcome you and encourage you to dance until dawn.
Alicante
This seaside city is lively year-round thanks to shopping destinations, markets and buzzing nightlife. The most popular tourist spot is Santa Bárbara Castle, which is built on top of a ninth-century Arabic fortress and holds the city's museum. While in Alicante, you can visit the island of Tabarca which has a stunning marine reserve, view pieces by Picasso and Dali at the Alicante Museum of Contemporary Art and enjoy tapas in the authentic Santa Cruz neighbourhood. In the evening, you can enjoy spending downtime in one of the city's many beach bars. For more of a party atmosphere, head to Alicante's old town El Barrio, or El Puerto where you can dance until 8am
So whether you're venturing to Spain to enjoy the culture and busy atmosphere of the cities or to party from dusk until dawn, you'll regret not spending at least a few days in these fabulous five fun destinations. We hope you enjoyed the read!
