Edinburghs Hogmanay 2009/2010 Fire and Light Spectacle
Following successful similar events held in Paris and St Petersburgh well known Edinburgh city venues will be opened and illuminated in the evening to present specially commissioned events and artists. Edinburghs Hogmanay LIGHT NIGHT will offer a rare opportunity for locals and visitors alike to view some of Edinburghs most famous attractions as never before.
LIGHT NIGHT, held on the night afore Hogmanay on the 30th December will include the following events:
- LEGENDARY LIGHT:
Edinburgh Castle will open its doors to the public at night. With the city twinkling below, and the Castle illuminated by light installations, visitors will experience legendary stories of this world famous landmark and of Scotland in a uniquely new way. - WINTER LIGHT:
At St. Giles Cathedral will be held a one off performance, Fragile Pitches, reflecting themes of light, space and fire in sound structures that compliment the experience of being in St Giles Cathedral at night. - DARK LIGHT:
For centuries, lain forgotten and abandoned hidden beneath the Royal Mile, are found a deep and secretive warren of hidden closes where real people lived, worked and died. Mary Kings Close, the most famous of these subterranean closes, will present a very rare opportunity to experience the sights, sounds and even the smells of the streets that time forgot and hear about the Great Fire of 1824 that changed the world. - AMBER LIGHT:
An exclusive tasting and private viewing of the worlds largest collection of Scotch whisky will be held at the world famous Scotch Whisky Experience. Visitors will enjoy a tasting of two very special Scotch whiskies in the glow of the beautifully illuminated Diageo Claive Vidiz Scotch Whisky Collection. - HOME LIGHT:
Open for the first time in the evening for 450 years will be John Knox House. John Knox was the famous father of the reformation in Scotland and eerie ghost tours by torchlight will be conducted throughout the premises and grounds. - FIRELIGHT:
The Royal Mile will be transformed into a breathtaking spectacle of fire and light by internationally renowned French performance and installation artists CARABOSSE. This specially commissioned show designed exclusively for Edinburghs Hogmanay promises stunning installations of fire, light and music - the likes of which have never been seen in Scotland before. Witness a truly unforgettable experience featuring four metre wide fireballs; intriguing projections of mechanical men, flickering on the outside walls of St Giles Cathedral; a furnace wheel billowing smoke and flames; radios from a past age hanging from buildings transmitting the quiet chatter of conversation; hollow three metre long tubes suspended in the street, grey and industrial by day but flaring vividly after dark as the night air passes through; and live music in the City Chambers Quadrangle and drifting from Parliament Square.
