ANZAC Gallipoli - Band of Brothers
The nine Victoria Cross medals won by Australians for bravery at Gallipoli have arrived in Melbourne and are now on display at the Shrine of Remembrance until September 26th of this year.
The medals themselves are on loan from the Australian War Memorial in Canberra and are on show here together for the first time since they were won in battle some 95 years ago.
Nine of the VCs were won by Victorians and seven of those VCs awarded were for bravery during the horrific Battle of Lone Pine from August 6th, 1915 where, in three days of bloody hand to hand trench warfare fought with bayonets and bombs, more than 2000 Australian men were lost. Turkish losses were estimated at near to 7000.
Some 60000 Australians served at Gallipoli during the ill fated campaign. They suffered 26,111 casualties counting 8141 dead.
The special free medal exhibition is entitled, THIS COMPANY OF BRAVE MEN; THE GALLIPOLI VCs, is touring Australia and is being supported by Kerry Stokes and Channel 7.
