How to dress for Oktoberfest 2010 in Munich

If you really want to celebrate Munichs Oktoberfest in 2010 in style like one of the Bavarian locals then why not get into the swing of things by dressing in the traditional local garb.

For Gals, this means a dress known as a DIRNDL and for the Guys, leather pants known as LEDERHOSEN.

Styles and prices of these "Trachten" (traditional Bavarian costumes) vary widely; you can get a simple and savvy, short vintage Dirndl for as low as 60 Euros or a richly embroidered custom-made dress for a couple of hundred Euros. Traditionally both Dirndls and Lederhosen are handed down from generation to generation through each family but of course you can still purchase them today. What you do need to be careful of is quality, as in recent years there have been a number of cheap, rip-off imports popping up in and around stores in Munich.

Here is a short list (and by no means comprehensive) of stores that stock only original or handed down authentic Dirndls and Lederhosen. We hope you will be able to find something to suit your tastes at least one of these stores.

1. Angermaier
For over 60 years, the specialty shop Angermaier has been selling traditional Bavarian costumes in fine quality, from Dirndl and Lederhosen, to accessories, and shoes. During Oktoberfest, Angermaier offers a "Weisn-Special" - a Dirndl set, complete with dress, shoes, scarf, and apron (around 129 Euro), or a Lederhosen combo, consisting of short leather pants, shirt, and shoes (for around 200 Euros).
